Is pollution from crippled Fukushima nuclear plant solved or not?
Oh yes, according Japanese newspapers everything is under control. However what does it mean under control. Here from Tokyo it almost looks the problem of pollution does not exist, however ones you go “there”, means closer to Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, you see the true.
Actually, do don’t see anybody except temporary workers. There are thousands of workers who build huge, several meters concrete walls against tsunami. People who used to look at the sea from their windows they see only concrete wall. And result? I guess they are frighten of the sea even more because they cannot see it without climbing the wall….
And there is another bunch of temporary workers who are scratching the Earth planet, literally. They are cutting of upper layer of soil, radioactively polluted one, and fill thousands of special designed black bags to store polluted soil for decades. Those fields of black bags are everywhere….everywhere. It is disaster, who wants to live there……
So, where are people? There are no people living in 20km zone from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Those towns are completely empty.
I went there to photograph recently opened towns which were closed after power plant accident in 2011. Those towns were the most polluted towns located within 20 km from crippled nuclear power plant.
The true is that towns like Namie, Futaba has been opened to residents but for other people and also during the night, towns remained closed for too hight radiation. Some others towns like Tomiyoka has been opened even during the night but those are scary ghost towns with no residents.
Obviously, robbery is the problem in those towns or at leasts it is an excuse for searching my car by police several times. Well, I did not mind but whenever I parked my car to shoot within few minutes there were two patrol cars asking to open trunk and search the car…..except my sleeping bag and few instant ramens there was anything, but it was still quite annoying.
I did not return very happy from Fukushima prefecture. I should not expect much, but what I said at the beginning, situation from Tokyo looks different. That is not coincident I guess. And that’s not end of the story; my friend sent me professional dosimeter and the worst surprise waited for me in front of my office……read here.
